CHAPTER XIX:

CURES AND MIRACLES

30 CE

Palestine

The following week Yeshua and his disciples were in their boat in the middle of the sea when a sudden squall came up. The disciples had noticed how fatigued Yeshua had become after preaching and healing most of the day and had urged him to rest. Next thing they knew he was fast asleep on a cushion in the stern, oblivious to the terrible turn the weather was taking. As the storm gathered momentum, their boat began to pitch and roll. Moment by moment the whistling wind picked up. Waves which had sported small whitecaps only moments before became monstrous walls of water, breaking over their craft and threatening to overturn it. Soon after, a particularly large swell nearly engulfed them completely, sending them careening headlong toward a dangerous vortex.

“Lord, help! Our boat’s sinking! We’re spinning out of control! Wake up, Master,” Peter cried above the howling wind.

“Save us, Lord!” cried Thomas, shaking Yeshua vigorously to rouse him. “How can you sleep? We’re all gonna die!”

Startled, Yeshua opened his eyes. Assessing the dangerous situation, he stood up, mustered and focused his awesome energy, and forthwith spread out his arms. “Calm down! Abate!” he commanded both waves and storm, concentrating intently.

The swirling vortex at once broke up, and the raging sea became as calm as a clam at high tide. At the same time, the sun began to peek out from behind the thick, threatening clouds that had blanketed the sky only moments before. Judas and the other disciples turned to one another awestruck. “Our Master even controls the seas and sky!” they gasped in astonishment.

With news of this and other miracles, Yeshua’s following grew; and ever larger numbers of people, including several important leaders, believed in him…no one more so than Judas, however. Each day the zealous disciple loved him more. Yeshua’s boyhood pal was particularly amazed, as he was time and time again, by his teacher’s boundless compassion and deep understanding. Everything he’d been told made sense once he got to thinking objectively about it. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” “Blessed are the peacemakers.” These along with many other sterling words of counsel continually inspired him.

The more Judas marveled, the closer he became to his former childhood buddy, who daily shared with him not only those lessons, but more of the knowledge he’d gained in the East. Ever since joining the Master’s band, furthermore, Judas had felt a unique kinship with him after learning that Yeshua had been born in Bethlehem of Judea, making the two of them the only Judeans in the group. In several months’ time Yeshua told him that he, too, was ready to begin preaching and healing in his name.

“Judas, the time has come for you to begin delivering homilies and curing people of their ailments,” he told him. “I am sending you forth this very day.”

“What? You can’t be serious. I can deliver public sermons well enough and assist
